I am once again impressed at Turbo C++ 4.0J's optimizer for still
perfectly inlining two levels of nested conditional branches if they
only depend on compile-time constants.

immediately below the dash row at the top
• In any case, there should be a blank line after the top comment of
a demarcated block, to keep IntelliSense-style systems from applying
the block comment to the first actual line of code…
• …but there shouldn't be one before the dash row at the bottom, where
it'd be redundant.

that we've been relying on lately is actually exclusive to C++ mode…

Nice to see that Borland C++ optimizes bit-tests to cover just the high
or low byte of a word if possible, and that these don't have to be
two-byte structures after all.

sort of matters, since we have this nice function pointer type that
expects pascal.
